Mchenja Camp
With a grove of baboon filled ebony trees on one side and the Luangwa River on the other, Time + Tide Mchenja Camp is a remote Zambian Eden.
Boasting one of the most picturesque locations of any bush camp in the South Luangwa National Park, this northern section of the park is awash with animals. Daily game drives offer wonderful sightings, from baboons swinging in the trees to various predators stalking across the plains. The nearby Lion Plain and Fish Eagle Lagoon bring herds of elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile to the fore. Mchenja is also the perfect destination to complete a walking safari, with visitors often including Mchenja as part of a camp-to-camp multi-day walking safari experience.
Travelling by foot in the ebony grove or along the river is an intimate and enchanting way to discover the finer details of the bush. Night drives are always rewarding at Time + Tide Mchenja, with the bush revealing a different nocturnal surprise every time. And at the right time of year, this is one of the best camps in the park for seeing the colourful carmine bee-eaters.
The camp's five luxurious tented suites all boast stunning views over the Luangwa River and a simple, elegant vibe. Inside, the tents have domed ceilings, large canvas windows, double beds, a separate bathroom, cane seating and plenty of room in which to change.
The bathroom begins inside, with a stand-alone claw foot bath, and moves outside to include a shower, basin and flush toilet. Built around a bent ebony trunk, Mchenja's thatched-roof main lounge has the feel of a spacious treehouse. Listen to a chorus of birdsong and laughing hippos from the viewing deck in the mornings. Between safari activities, relax in the refreshing pool overlooking the river. Dinner is best served under the stars, on the riverbank. Afterwards, retire to the glowing embers of the campfire with a whisky and listen to the sounds of the Zambian night.
