Mwaleshi & Takwela
If you love walking in a vast, unspoilt wilderness, staying in rustic accommodation and indulging in hearty meals, then Mwaleshi Camp is the place for you.
Mwaleshi Camp is situated on a scenic bend of the Mwaleshi River, a clear water perennial stream feeding the Luangwa River in North Luangwa National Park. It’s a far flung and well-managed park which enjoys significant support from Frankfurt Zoological Society and a highly motivated complement of staff from Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife and North Luangwa Conservation Project. This area of Zambia is renowned for its large population of lion, huge herds of buffalo, and endemic cookson’s wildebeest. Following the reintroduction of black rhino in 2003, the opportunity to see these iconic animals in this park increases every year.
Miles from anywhere, the outside world melts away as nature surprises, delights and soothes the senses. Activities are done on foot, following existing animal trails. Every walk is led by an experienced guide and an armed Naitonal Park scout and offers a chance to spot elephant, hippos, antelope, over 400 species of birds, and a whole host of predators including hyena, lions, and African wild dog. A wonderful day trip to the Mwaleshi Falls or a camp-out for the brave is optional for longer stays. With just four thatched chalets rebuilt annually out of natural materials and uninterrupted views of Mwaleshi River, the camp offers you a genuine feeling of solitude and seclusion.
For those looking to visit the North Luangwa but looking to do more game drives, Takwela Camp which was built in 2019, is also on offer. Situated on Remote Africa’s private land at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwaleshi Rivers, Takwela is a slightly more permanent feature with stunning views across a resident hippo pod to pristine bush on all sides. This camp is ensconced in the
Luangwa’s typical riverine forest of sausage, ebony and monkey bread trees. Walking safaris and game drives are on offer to explore a different area of the North Luangwa with huge natural springs, riverine forest and ox bow lakes, a feature typical of the Luangwa’s winding nature.
Takwela accommodates up to eight guests in four en suite chalets. In keeping with the Remote Africa ethos, the camp is solar powered and built, primarily, from local natural materials and constructed with local skills. From Mwaleshi Camp, it's a beautiful 10km morning walk down the Mwaleshi river which is a great option for a camp-to-camp activity for strong walkers.
